Todd Phillips (War Dogs, The Hangover 1, 2 & 3) revealed in the comments of one of his fantastic behind-the-scenes Joker photos that the movie has been given an ‘R’ rating in the states.
Given the wider DC universe is veering in a more ‘fun’ direction with last years Aquaman bringing over-the-top 80s action and James Gunn being brought in to breathe new life into Suicide Squad, it’ll be interesting to see if this take feeds into the wider DCU or whether it remains standalone.
The trailer released earlier in the year certainly seems to back up the newly acquired classification, with its grim tone showing the decline of one Arthur Fleck as his life seemingly falls apart, and his eventual transformation into everyones favourite Bat-nemesis.
With Joaquin Pheonix in the lead role, depicting Arthur as a failing stand-up on Gotham’s comedy circuit, the cast boasts a raft of top notch talent including, Zazie Beetz, Brian Tyree Henry, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and one Robert De Niro.
Here’s hoping for a solid character study, and what we’ve seen so far show great promise.
The film opens on 4 October.
